Are Billboards Effective?

When businesses advertise, it’s crucial to find the most effective avenues—especially on a tight marketing budget.

What does efficient advertising look like? Spending as little as possible to reach many consumers, then getting them to learn more and buy your goods or services. There are many modes of advertising, and they all look promising, but they aren’t equally effective. That’s why we’re here to help!

Consumer Audience and Trust

Two of the most important factors in advertising are reaching a wide audience and earning consumer trust. And according to The New York Times, people dislike ads. Most online consumers use ad blockers, and most people prefer paid, ad-free entertainment over free streaming with ads.

57%

Dislike ads that play before a video

43%

Don’t watch those ads at all

According to Harvard Business Review, traditional advertising is expected to rebound after a steep decline in the 2010s. Targeted online ads often reach people who already bought from a business, sometimes several times a month, leading to ad fatigue.

More traditional modes of advertising earn the highest consumer trust:

82%

Trust print advertising

80%

Trust television advertising

76%

Trust direct mail advertising

But not all print is equally effective. Newspaper and magazine ads are trusted, but fewer than 25% of adults read them, and only 10.8% of Gen Z adults do.

Billboards

Many consider billboards old-fashioned, and they are old: the first known billboard lease was in 1867. But billboards aren’t just still viable; they might be the most effective medium of all. There’s a reason they’re still widely used today!

$3–$6According to the OAAA, billboards cost $3 to $6 per thousand impressions, the lowest of any advertising format.

Billboards are large, highly visible, semi-permanent, and placed where consumers gather, which is how they reach such a large audience.

497% ROIBillboard advertising returned an average of $5.97 for every dollar spent in 2017, higher than digital, print, and radio.
Billboards aren’t just more cost-efficient for impressions; they’re better at driving consumer action and generating revenue.
