Out-of-Home Glossary

If you’re looking to enter the world of out-of-home advertising, grasping the industry vocabulary is an excellent place to start. Luckily, we’ve created a glossary of relevant terms so that you don’t have to!

Out-of-home advertising, otherwise known as OOH advertising, encompasses digital and traditional billboard campaigns. There is a wide variety of ad formats beneath the OOH umbrella, including billboards, digital billboards, bulletins, posters, and junior posters.

  • Billboard: Large advertising displays that are designed to be viewed from considerable distances. 
  • Digital Billboard: Advertising displays designed to be viewed from a distance that is brightened with LED lighting.
  • Bulletin: The largest standardized OOH format, typically located in high-traffic zones.
  • Poster: Standard poster format, often measuring 12’3” x 24’6”.
  • Junior Poster: Standard poster format, measuring 6’ x 12’.
  • Color Mode: RGB (Red, Green, Blue) and CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key) are color modes used to design an OOH ad. 

Additionally, there are also several terms that refer to the effectiveness and cost of your OOH ad campaign.

  • CPM: Stands for Cost Per Thousand. Refers to the cost of advertising exposure opportunities that is the equivalent of one rating point in a geographical area. 
  • Impressions: The average number of times a consumer sees your advertisement. 
  • Traffic Audience: The number of travelers that an OOH ad in a given physical location.
  • Reach: The number of times a person has seen an OOH ad at least once.
