Traditional vs. Digital Billboards: Choosing the Right Format

In the age of everything being digital, it’s natural to assume digital billboards are superior to that of traditional, static billboards. However, there are clear advantages to both formats and multiple factors to consider when deciding between the two. When it comes down to it, the smartest choice between a static billboard and a digital billboard is the one that works best for your campaign.

Digital Billboards

Pros

  • Engagement: With multiple displays being screened on a single billboard, this rotating motion actually draws the attention of those passing by.
  • Flexibility: The beauty of digital means the ability to change designs in a matter of hours rather than waiting for one to be printed.
  • Advertise at Peak Times: Digital billboards allow you to advertise at peak times and for shorter periods of time. Whether it’s during rush hour or for a seasonal campaign, you can make sure the ad is seen at opportune times.

Cons

  • Sharing: While the rotating motion sparks a passerby’s attention, this comes with the cost of your ad not always being visible.
  • Higher Costs: Digital billboards are generally more expensive than traditional billboards.
  • Sign Codes: Some jurisdictions place restrictions on, or outwardly ban digital billboards. This means they might not be available for purchase in certain markets.

Traditional Billboards

Pros

  • Exclusivity: A huge upside to static billboards is that all eyes get to be on your ad and your ad only. You won’t have to deal with your sign being missed because the display rotated.
  • Availability: Static billboards makeup the majority of outdoor advertising space and are more readily available.
  • Room for Creativity: While digital graphics are limited to specified dimensions, static billboards offer the possibility for extensions and pop-ups that show off your company’s outside-the-box thinking to attract more views.

Cons

  • Limited Content: With printing and installation being factors, static billboards are bound to one design at a time with no flexibility to change on a whim.
  • Added Expenses: Traditional billboards may be cheaper overall; however, they do come with additional installation and printing expenses.
  • Upkeep: Traditional billboards are more susceptible to weather-related wear and tear damages than their digital counterparts.
